What Is an AI Automation Agency (and Do You Need One)?
What the term covers
An AI automation agency builds the systems that move work between your tools without a person in the middle. In practice that means orchestration in n8n, Make or Zapier, with custom code and LLM calls added where an off-the-shelf connector cannot do the job.
The label is broader than it sounds. It covers two-person consultancies that live inside n8n all day and fifty-person firms shipping custom agent infrastructure, and both call themselves the same thing. What separates them is usually visible in the first call: whether they ask about your data model and failure handling, or jump straight to a demo.
When hiring one makes sense
Three situations come up most often among the agencies we track:
- A process is manual, repetitive and already documented, but nobody on the team has time to build the automation
- The integration touches a system without a native connector, which means custom code rather than a drag-and-drop workflow
- Something is already automated but breaks silently, and the team needs error handling and monitoring rather than a rebuild
Outside those three cases, a technical operations hire who can spend a few weeks in n8n or Make often gets you further for less money.
